Lloyd Axel started racing in 1926 and won "Big Car" races across the United States from California to Connecticut and set a National Speed Record at Winchester Indiana. He was the founder of the Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association while winning 33 Midget Mains from 1940 to '42. He also finished 2nd behind Louie Unser at Pikes Peak in 1941. 1954 was his last trip up the Pikes Peak course in the #29 Ray Koch Auto Parts car. Axel would wow the crowd at Elm Wood Park Speedway in 1965 while wrenching the Bud Shearston Offy with the BCRA, when the regular driver didn't show. Axel strapped on a helmet and proceeded to win the Main, all the while dicing with a young Cotton Farmer.
